Hillsborough

Hillsborough, in San Mateo County, in the San Francisco Bay Area, is one of the wealthiest communities in America. It is located 17 miles south of San Francisco. Hillsborough’s landscape is dominated by large homes; the town zoning and subdivision ordinances require a 2,5002’ minimum house size and minimum lot size of one half acre. As a result, there are no multifamily residences or businesses within the city limits. The only non-residential properties are the town’s 7 schools, town and county government facilities, a golf course, a country club, and a small park. Hillsborough has its own well-regarded public elementary and middle schools, but no public high school. The Hillsborough school district is ranked as the #1 school district in California and one of the top ten school districts in the country. The area is known for its winding, hilly topography. Many lots include fairly steep slopes, with the landscape generally flattening to the east. The population is estimated to be 11,400, +5.4% since 2000.   Median household income in 2013 was $200,000. Median home value in 2013 was over $1,000,000.
