Now that summer is finally here, it’s time for hot weather, cold drinks, and plenty of outdoor entertaining!  Hosting a barbecue is the perfect way to enjoy some fresh air with friends and family in the comfort of your own home.  Whether you’re planning a small get-together or a huge celebration, you can never go wrong with a fun summer cookout!

Here Are 10 Ways To Get Your Backyard Ready For The Perfect Barbecue This Summer:

1. Mow the lawn

Don’t let an embarrassing, overgrown lawn ruin your barbecue!  Protect your guests from ticks and other unwanted pests by trimming the grass before your party.  You’ll enjoy having a well-manicured lawn, and your guests will love the smell of your freshly cut grass!

2. Trim trees and bushes

If you have plants taking over your yard, set aside a few minutes to prune overgrowth.  Start by removing any dead or unhealthy branches, and then work on removing anything else that protrudes into your entertaining space.  For hard-to-reach branches that require removal, don’t be afraid to call a professional.

You may be surprised by how much more room your yard has afterwards!

3. Treat your yard with bug repellent

Keep your guests safe from disease-carrying insects without using harsh chemical pesticides.  Instead, use a natural insect repellent to prevent insects from crashing your party.

4. Create a shaded area

It’s always nice to provide guests with a shaded area, especially if the weather’s particularly hot on the day of your barbecue.

Awnings provide a quick way to easily block out the sun alongside your home, and are definitely worth the investment if you own a house.

If you’re on a tight budget or rent your home, though, large umbrellas and tents are also great options.

5. Clean your deck or patio

Be sure to remove dirt, pollen, and other buildup that may have accumulated on your outdoor living space.

If you have hard-to-remove algae or moss, it may be worthwhile to hire a professional who can pressure wash the area for you.

6. Have a backup plan in case of rain

Be prepared to move the party inside if the weather takes a turn for the worse.  Clear away any clutter inside your home and clean up in the kitchen, bathroom, and living room areas!

7. Prepare your grill

Clean the grill and check that you have plenty of propane to cook for your guests.  When in doubt, it never hurts to pick up a spare tank.  The last thing you want is to run out of fuel with a backyard full of hungry guests!

8. Set up music and speakers

Outdoor speakers with Bluetooth make it easy for you and your guests to control the playlist during your party!

9. Install outdoor lighting

There’s no better way to finish a barbecue than sitting around the fire pit after the sun’s gone down.  Make sure your guests can see at night by having setting up outdoor lights around your walkway and entertainment area.

If your yard doesn’t have sufficient lighting, citronella torches are a stylish, affordable option that you can install in just a few minutes!

10. Create a kid-friendly zone

Pick up some fun outdoor activities, like horseshoes, cornhole, or even a board game, so your guests who have kids can enjoy some free time.
