Yesterday, The Mercury News shared an exciting announcement about plans for a new game bar coming to downtown San Jose.  Thanks to local entrepreneurs who’ve been motivated to take action by some of the latest improvements in the area, the former E. Santa Clara Street location of Toons nightclub is being brought back to life as a new arcade and bar named miniBoss.

Named for the video game villains players must defeat before reaching the final level of a game, miniBoss is inspired by the famous game bar in Manhattan, as well as similar concepts in San Francisco and LA.

miniBoss will combine elements of classic 1980s and ‘90s arcades with a modern twist.  George Lahlouh, who co-owns miniBoss, was quoted in The Mercury News, saying, “It will be loud and vibrant, noisy just like the old arcade machines…  We will have tasty cocktails and draft beers.  We will also have a super good kitchen with walk-up counter service.”

More New Businesses To Come In Downtown San Jose

Since Google proposed the development of additional office towers near the Diridon train station, downtown San Jose has become increasingly attractive for new brick-and-mortar businesses.  With the launch of miniBoss, rumored to open in the summer of 2018, it’s likely that the area will experience a revitalization as more new businesses will open along E. Santa Clara Street.

Adobe Systems has also expressed interest in expanding its downtown San Jose location, and will be adding a fourth office tower to its existing complex.  David Taxin, a partner with commercial real estate brokerage Meacham Oppenheimer, was quoted saying, “This is how to start, even if the block isn’t in great shape… You have to begin to chip away, use these old buildings and improve things.”

According to a city memo, miniBoss is just the beginning of a thriving nightlife in downtown San Jose, and there have been an increasing number of “private efforts to achieve a…vibrant, 24-hour city center.”
